FLAIL: an old-school fantasy brawler

Created by Games Omnivorous

FLAIL is an old-school, fantasy RPG where spells act up, weapons fall apart, and characters survive mostly through nerve and sheer luck. Designed for people who like single-session dungeons and short campaigns of 10~15 sessions. Low-prep, max play.

UNBOXING VIDEO! VOTING FOR THE GM SCREEN! AND MORE!
about 2 months ago – Wed, Apr 22, 2026 at 07:04:32 AM

TAKE A PEEK AT THE OFFICIAL UNBOXING VIDEO!

ALSO,

Let's make a poll for the GM screen. I'm very undecided on the final art for the GM screen. To be honest, I've kinda grown accustomed to the current piece by Justin McElroy (@thoughtographic) but let's see what you think. I have four alternative concepts, so if there's one in particular that gets some sort of mass voting, i'll reconsider. Scroll down and vote please.

ALSO, SHOUT OUT TO FRIENDS!

There's a lot of cool projects and campaigns that have either ended recently or are still live right now. I really like the idea of building a community with fellow creators and artists and designers so here's a shout out to some cool things that you should totally check out.

  • BREATHLESS: FRIGHTMARE EDITION - this is a really cool project by our friends at Mythworks (who did the incredible Wildsea RPG). A zombie horror roleplaying game about surviving in a world gone bad and trying to build a resilient community amidst the chaos. The whole thing is styled as classic VHS tapes and looks sick.
  • FOMORIA, EPIC FOLK HORROR - Johan Nohr of MÖRK BORG fame is teaming up with Tania Herrero to deliver a new folk horror game where there is no sun and characters of different clans must come together to survive, hunt the Eldritch, and purge the Red Plague.
  • DUNGEON INC. - our good friends The Merry Mushmen (Knock!, Black Sword Hack, etc) are back. This game is "about monsters working for an organisation running the largest megadungeon in the land". Which means "players are hosts, tasked with solving ‘client issues’, mostly adventurers refusing to die". I wanna play this so badly.

THANK YOU! POLL BELOW.

€100K REACHED! NEW GOAL REVEALED! WASD20 REVIEW!
about 2 months ago – Sun, Apr 19, 2026 at 02:35:47 AM

WASD20 FLAIL REVIEW!

Nate at WASD20 just made a stellar review of FLAIL. If you're still on the fence and wanna take a closer look at the game, step right up.

WE DID IT! THE €100K GOAL IS DOWN!

All boxsets now officially include the Hireling Tear Pad ! Let's see how long these actually last at your gaming table :D THAAAAANK YOU TK YOU TK YOU

€125K NEW GOAL FOUNDRY VTT IMPLEMENTATION!

At €125k, we're committing to build a cool VTT implementation of FLAIL for Foundry Virtual Tabletop. A lot of you have (fairly!) pointed out that the game was very much designed to shine IRL, in person-play with all the item cards, tokens, dry-erase sheets and tactile bits. And i guess you're right? That's fair. So now - thanks to your support and feedback - we are in the position to take FLAIL to the next level and, hopefully, bring a similar experience to virtual tables. Thanks to your generosity, we can hire someone to properly build a VTT Foundry implementation with all the rules, character sheets, item cards, everything really you need to run a game of FLAIL. Let's do this?!

THANK YOU THANK YOU

ALMOST €100K! NEW PATREON DROP!
about 2 months ago – Fri, Apr 17, 2026 at 08:36:38 AM

WE'RE ALMOST AT €100K MARK !

We're closing in on the next stretch goal: the hireling tear pad. Circa €3k to go! THANK YOU THANKKKKKK YOU. When we hit that goal, more shall be unlocked. Keep an eye out for them.

NEW PATREON ADVENTURE JUST DROPPED !

In January, i started a Patreon account to make monthly drops for FLAIL. These will include alternative rules, new spells, guilds, religions, wizard masters, etc. and of course adventures for FLAIL. So far, there's five "grab-and-go" modules, as i'm calling them, there to check out. These are low-prep (or no-prep really) modules that can be plugged into any existing game quickly. I always end up taking about 2-3 hours to play these things, so this is all one needs for a good session of play.

  • #1 Tomb of 1,000 Gears: a paranoid gnome inventor, Master Gnorbitt, designed his own tomb so that only someone worthy could break it and claim his ultimate prize.
  • #2 Best Served Cold: an assassin guild used to sell corpses to a necromancer (because why not) but the necromancer screwed up and sent a Lantern of Undeath as payment: all their cold-stored bodies came alive. Oops.
  • #3 The Wretched Saint's Miracles: a dark cult that took over an abandoned church to worship a mummified deity who "cures" folk of all sicknesses, but not really, because they die a few days later and it's all part of the plan.
  • #4 Oubliette of the Snake King: classic dungeon delve into the eternal prison of Ss'thak (the Snake King), who was betrayed and buried by his own priests, and is now very much ready to come alive once again.
  • #5 The Flying Lootsman: a flying galleon stalks the skies, raining liquid fire onto towns before pirates swing down on ropes to loot whatever survives.

So, check it out if you want some content for FLAIL. And consider pledging $3 per month to keep on getting these things! THANK YOU!

1,000 BACKERS! FLAIL INSPIRATIONS!
about 2 months ago – Wed, Apr 15, 2026 at 08:26:57 AM

WE'VE CROSSED THE 1,000 BACKERS MARK !

With only one week into the campaign, we've passed the thousand backers mark. THANKKKKK YOU again for all the love. Lots of creativity surging over at the Discord as creators prep their content for the SWINGS HARD WITH FLAIL JAM. Check it out. To celebrate, let's talk FLAIL INSPIRATIONS.

MUSIC!

One of the bands could be very well be FLAIL's official soundtrack is the BUDOS BAND. The band combines doom, stoner rock with afrobeat, soul and jazz, all wrapped up in a sword & sorcery mythology. The track below is called LAIR OF 1,000 SERPENTS which is pretty much a FLAIL adventure begging to be written. What's even more incredible is that i actually contacted Brian Profilio, the drummer of this awesome ensemble, after finding out he’s also an illustrator and he ended up doing a couple of majestic pieces for FLAIL. Dream come true, and I wanna thank you publicly for this, Brian.

WHAT ELSE?

There are other bands that really live in the FLAIL headspace. This is the kind of stuff I had on repeat while writing it. THE SORCERERS is a must. Their second album basically plays out like an RPG session: a party searching for the lost city of the monkey god, and it ends with them actually summoning the deity. They’ve also got another record with a track called "Ancestral Machines", which feels like it exists in the same universe as the Undying Sands.

ANGINE DE POITRINE is another, because they are 333-year-old intergalactic explorers from outer space that travelled to "marvel at hot dogs, pyramids, and rock music in all its glorious excess". Errrr.... is there anything more FLAIL than this? Perhaps i should (must?) write SPACE FLAIL.

Jazz is absolutely not an obvious pick, which is probably why this works :D HORACEE ARNOLD'S album below is loose, weird, hypnotic, slightly off-kilter and full of strange momentum. Just like FLAIL i guess. Plusssssssssss, "Tales of the Exonerated Flea", this album's name, really feels like another FLAIL adventure waiting to be written. Can anyone write this module? Please?

OTHER MEDIA?

There's a bunch of other media i consider FLAIL inspirational. I could do this all day. I kinda see the game as Cube (1997) meets A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2026) directed by Fritz Leiber and set in the city of Lankhmar. What does that even mean?! you ask. Well, it means cool, weird, puzzly, trap-filled dungeons in a universe of anti-heroes and thieves and guilds and backstabbery and skullduggery - thinking of heists, drunken misadventures, revenge arcs, cursed treasures, and deals with questionable gods - all coated in that dry, slightly-awkward humour of Duncan the tall and the Egg. I mean, is there a better visual representation of a Warrior and their hireling than Dunk and the Egg? Maybe. Maybe not. Probably not?

What do YOU think FLAIL feels like? It's your game now so you tell me!

THANKS!
Andre.

about 2 months ago – Sun, Apr 12, 2026 at 12:40:51 PM

JP COOVERT FLAIL REVIEW!

JP Coovert just released an excellent review of FLAIL. If you're still on the fence and wanna take a deeper look into the game, behold.

ANOTHER GOALS KNOCKED DOWN!

All boxsets are officially coming with four Player Record Envelopes ! These are meant for the players to store their item cards and notes in between sessions. THANKKKKKKK YOUUUUUUUU

Now, we move onto the next Stretch Goal: the Hireling Tear Pad. If we reach the €100k mark, all boxsets will include a hireling tear pad.

THANK YOU THANK YOU
